CHARLESTON, S.C.  — One Charleston Police officer was hospitalized, after several hundred protesters rallied at Marion Square against racial profiling and allegations of disparate killings by police.

According to a statement released by the Charleston Police Department, the officer was taken to the hospital to be checked out, after he was struck in the chest with an object at the intersection of King Street and Broad Street.

Police say the incident happened after protesters left Marion Square, marched downtown and back to Marion Square.

The rally was organized by college students from Atlanta. Organizers say the rally was not directly affiliated with Black Lives Matter.

The protest was originally supposed to be a march from Marion Square to Emanuel AME church but protesters were told to not march toward the historic church because of legal reasons.

For several hours people of all ages and ethnicities March while chanting “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice, No Peace.”

“I didn’t expect this when I came to Charleston but it’s good to see it,” said one bystander, “it’s not only in Atlanta where I’m from, it’s all over.”

No arrests were made following the protest.
