SC math professor wins second North American Scrabble Championship title

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WBTW) – Over twenty years later, one South Carolina teacher claimed his second victory at the North American Scrabble Championship.

David Gibson of Spartanburg won the title in 1994 but returned to the competition this year in Indiana to beat out 400 others to take home the $10,000 prize, Hasbro said.

The competition lasted five days, and Gibson played 31 rounds of competitive scrabble before the North American Scrabble Players Association crowned him winner.

The press release from Hasbro says players move through the ranks based on their win-loss record and total points scored against opponent.

Gibson defeated Dr. Ian Weinstein of Coral Springs, Florida  by more than 26 points with a final score of 397-371.

“Among the words that Gibson used to clinch his victory were DREARIES, SERRANO, ORCINOLS and SPELTER,” the release said.
