COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina will hold its largest one-day volunteer cleanup of state beaches and rivers on Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  The Beach Sweep/River Sweep is held every 3rd Saturday in September.  Thousands will volunteer their time to clear beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps of aquatic debris. The cleanup, organized by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources, has taken place annually since 1988 – when Sea Grant first started it.

All along the Grand Strand coast, various municipalities including Pawleys Island and Surfside Beach will conduct a Beach Sweep.  The Town of Surfside Beach starts it beach cleanup at the Surfside Beach Pier. Bags and gloves will be provided for each participant. For more information contact Debbie Ellis at 843.650.9548 or email at dellis@surfsidebeach.org.
