MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A Myrtle Beach man who pleaded guilty less than five weeks ago now says he wants a new trial.
Darrell Faqwan Deas, 35, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on February 12 for the shooting death of Latron Lewis, 30, in 2015.
The shooting came after a fight in a parking lot on 21st Avenue North.
Deas was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
According to documents obtained by News13, Deas is asking for a new trial, or his sentenced to be overturned.
In the hand-written document, Deas says his attorney, “did not raise the proper issues of defense that could have gotten me less time on my sentence such as, stand your ground & double jeopardy.”
According to a news release from the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office sent in Feburary, the judge “followed a recommendation of a 15-year prison sentence for Deas, who had faced up to 30 years in prison for the manslaughter charge.”
The release also said, “It is a most serious violent offense and Deas must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence.”
