DILLON, SC (WBTW) – A press release from the City of Dillon Police Department confirms an officer has officially resigned after being arrested for driving under the influence.
Dillon Police officer Tony Cummings was arrested after he was reportedly discovered unresponsive behind the wheel of a car early Wednesday morning, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins.
Cpl. Collins says a passerby spotted a vehicle parked along Southern Acres Loop around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. After noticing a man sitting behind the wheel of the car, who appeared to be passed out, the passerby called police. South Carolina Highway Patrol, EMS and Dillon County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call, Cpl. Collins confirms.
It was determined that the man behind the wheel was Cummings, who refused to take a breathalyzer test, says Cpl. Collins. Cummings was arrested and booked into the Dillon County Detention Center for driving under the influence.
Dillon Police Chief David Lane says his office is just in the beginning stages of reviewing the circumstances of Cummings’ arrest and a decision regarding Cummings’ future employment with the police department has not been decided.
When asked if Cummings is currently on active duty or administrative leave, Chief Lane said “neither.” Chief Lane says once he has all the information from the arrest, he will then have an answer.
