MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Tropical Storm Hermine caused major flooding in the Cameron Village neighborhood off Highway 707. The storm left huge puddles of water in some areas of the neighborhood, leaving many neighbors stuck.
“Fifty percent of our community is still underwater and they can’t get out,” said Pete Brotherton on Saturday morning. “The water isn’t getting out of our community at the pace it should be. Emergency services can’t get in here, some of our residents can’t get out to get to work. We just want a solution to the problem.”
Brotherton said this happens every time there is significant rainfall, most recently the flooding in October 2015. After that flooding, neighbors met with the Homeowners Association and Horry County Council to talk about the drainage issues.
“None of the issues were resolved,” said Les Riggan. “You can see the problem was not addressed or fixed.”
Neighbors said when the water builds up, it ruins their yards and causes homeowners to pay thousands to re-sod and re-build porches. Larry Mandell said he just paid over $2,000 to fix sod and drainage issues on his property.
Mandell also said his neighbor slipped and fell on the night of the storm because the water came over her dock. He said it took the ambulance over 30 minutes to get to her because of all the water in their neighborhood and elsewhere in the community.
“Holmestown road was blocked so they kind of took the long way around,” added Mandell. “We waited quite a long time.”
Neighbors said the neighborhood is pleasant, but they will keep pushing for change until this issue is resolved.
“Cameron Village is a beautiful place to live with great neighbors, but when we get rain like this we can’t get out of our community and it’s ridiculous for us to have to deal with that,” said Brotherton.
“The water’s just not leaving and they’ve got to find a solution,” added Mandell.
News 13 reached out to the Homeowners Association for Cameron Village, but because the office was closed on Saturday, we have not heard back.
