LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – A murder suspect facing the death penalty is now accused of stabbing another inmate with a shank.
Sheriff Burnis Wilkins in Robeson County tells News13 that, Chauncy Askew, was removed from the jail in Lumberton and taken to an undisclosed facility. Askew did not meet the age requirements to be moved to Central Prison in Raleigh.
Askew is in custody charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Trooper Kevin Conner.
Conner was shot October 17 around 12:15 a.m. while conducting a traffic stop on U.S. 701 near Sellers Town Road in Columbus County.
Askew was later arrested in Loris.
Sheriff Wilkins says Askew made a shank from a comb and used it against an 18-year-old inmate.
That victim was taken to the hospital where he received five stitches. The sheriff says other injuries were superficial.
Wilkins also says that Askew put graffiti on an entire wall of his cell that depicted a detention officer hanging from a chain with the words “cop killer” and “death to cops.”
