MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – September is National Literacy Month and staff with the Horry County Literacy Council are trying to spread the word about literacy in our area.

The council estimates around 25-30 percent of people in Horry County are functionally illiterate. Volunteers are trying to change that statistic with a brand new facility on North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach as well as their unique programming.

“Ours at this point in time is the only one to serve one-on-one and through a special program for those that may have some level of dyslexia or learning disability,” said Executive Director of the Horry County Literacy Council, Pat Bush.

Volunteers work with kids and adults who struggle with basic reading and spelling skills and use a special program called the Barton Reading and Spelling System. The organization also provides tutoring for English as a Second Language.

The Horry County Literacy Council is looking for dedicated volunteers to help others increase their reading and spelling skills as well as their confidence. They are also hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner on Saturday January 28, 2017 in Myrtle Beach. For more information, visit their website: http://www.horrycountyliteracy.org/
