GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating after a deadly accident in Georgetown County Wednesday night.
According to the agency’s website, the accident happened just after 7 p.m. on Johnson Road at Lane Creek Drive.
Cpl. Sonny Collins with SC HP says a motorcyclist was being pursued by the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office. A release from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a complaint of people operating dirt bikes that were possibly stolen in a public roadway at 7:05 p.m. When deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled the scene.
As the motorcyclist was passing through the intersection of Lanes Creek Road and Johnson Road, the driver of the motorcycle hit a log truck that was traveling on Johnson Road, Collins said.
The release from the sheriff’s office says the driver was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The coroner has not yet released the name of the victim.
SC Highway Patrol and the SCHP MAIT team are investigating.
Thursday afternoon Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office sent a release that confirmed the motorcycle in question was in fact a stolen vehicle.
