ROCK HILL, SC — Winthrop University recently surveyed 694 South Carolina residents by phone from September 18-26 to ask participates about who they would likely vote for in the presidential election.
According to the Winthrop Poll, 42% of South Carolinians support Republican candidate Donald Trump and 38% support Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. 7% of participants were undecided, while none of the third party candidates register support in the double digits.
However, Clinton fared somewhat better than Trump when residents were asked who they thought was more capable.
Winthrop Poll Director, Scott Huffmon says, “While Clinton is seen as the more capable candidate, she is also viewed as more dishonest. However, both candidates are setting records for being viewed unfavorably. While Trump has the lead, these factors may contribute to why he is underperforming expectations of a hypothetical generic Republican versus generic Democrat matchup.”
Governor’s Nikki Haley’s approval rating remains strong among South Carolinians at 57%, according to the poll.
South Carolina U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham has a 41% disapproval rating, while junior senator, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott is more highly rated among the Republican base with a 52% approval rating, according to the Winthrop poll.
President Obama’s approval rating has risen to 48% among South Carolinians, but his disapproval is almost at 50% for likely voters
