COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – An inmate at a high-security prison in South Carolina has died in what officials are calling an “inmate on inmate altercation.”
Citing a South Carolina Department of Corrections tweet, news outlets report the Broad River Correctional Institution inmate was injured Monday afternoon and later died at a hospital. It’s unclear how many inmates were involved. The DOC says it and state law enforcement are investigating the death as a homicide.
Prison records identify the slain inmate as 43-year-old Damon Latroy Doyle, who was serving life sentences for kidnapping and assault with intent to kill. He was transferred to the facility in Columbia last year. The DOC lists the prison a high-security institution designed to primarily house violent offenders with longer sentences and inmates with behavioral problems.
