One person is dead following a crash in Darlington County Monday.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee confirms to News13 that 79-year-old James Johnson of Hartsville was pronounced dead at the scene. Hardee says the vehicle he was driving collided with a truck, just outside Hartsville on Highway 151 (Bobo Newsom Highway).
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, troopers responded to a crash on Bobo Newsom Highway, at Westover Drive.
Lance Corporal Matt Southern with Highway Patrol says troopers responded to the crash around 3:10 p.m. Monday. Southern said two vehicles were involved.
Troopers say vehicle 1 was a tractor-trailer, and was traveling southbound. That’s when vehicle 2, a Ford Explorer Sport Trac traveling eastbound on Westover Drive, tried to make a right turn onto Bobo Newsom Highway. That’s when the crash happened.
The driver of the Ford, Johnson, became trapped in the vehicle and died on the scene. Troopers say he was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. That person was also wearing a seatbelt, according to troopers.
