CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – A Loris woman was taken to jail Tuesday night after concerned citizens called police when they saw her popping pills, yelling profanity, and falling asleep at the wheel while traveling down Church Street in Conway, all with a small child in the back seat, according to a Conway Police Department incident report.
Jessica Lynn Akins, 27, of Loris, was approached by an officer as she exited a gas station on Church Street. The officer notes
that Akins was stumbling in attempts to get back to her car and had a strong smell of alcohol coming from her body. The officer then noticed the 3-year-old boy sitting in the back seat of Akins’ car. The incident report states that Akins’ eyes were glassy and her speech was slurred as she attempted to explain her erratic behavior.
Akins admitted to drinking, the report states, and then agreed to complete three field sobriety tests – the horizontal gaze, walk and turn test, and one leg stand test – all of which she failed, the officer notes.
Once the 27-year-old was handcuffed and placed in the officer’s cruiser, the items within her vehicle were inventoried for the tow report. The report states officers found an open container of alcohol, several empty bindles containing residue to heroin usage, and a hypodermic needle.
Akins’ blood alcohol level was documented at .21%, and the small child strapped into the back of her vehicle was taken into emergency care by the Department of Social Services.
Akins is charged with DUI, open container in a motor vehicle, driving under suspension, possession of drug paraphernalia, and child endangerment. She was booked into J. Rueben Long Detention Center at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday and released Wednesday at 1:36 p.m. on a $4,894.50 bond.
