WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) — When it comes time for Barack Obama to transfer his power to the next president in January, he’ll be the first president in history to include the transfer of social media control as well. The official White House Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter pages were all created during Obama’s presidency.
According to the president’s deputy chief digital officer, Kori Schulman, the official @POTUS Twitter handle and the White House Snapchat and Instagram accounts (including all the followers Obama accumulated during his 8 years in office) will be passed on to the next president.
“The president has made clear that a smooth transition between administrations is one of his top priorities, and digital is a key component of that effort. While much of the digital transition is unprecedented in the United States, the peaceful transition of power is not. There are some important principles we can work from.”
Michelle Obama will also give up control of @FLOTUS, which may need to be updated to @FGOTUS depending on who wins on November 8th.
