CHERAW, SC (WBTW) – A man is in custody after a police standoff in Cheraw Saturday afternoon.

According to Chief Keith Thomas Cheraw Police Department, a resident on the 300 block of High Street called police to her home in Cheraw at 2:33 p.m.

The caller said her adult child was locked in the attic and appeared to be hallucinating.

Police arrived and tried to talk to the man, but Chief Thomas said the man was incoherent and wouldn’t hold a conversation with officers.

Police said he was kicking holes down through the ceiling and they found live rounds and shell casings at the scene.

At that point, Cheraw Police set up a perimeter and called in Chesterfield County SWAT for assistance.

As SWAT continued negotiations, the man in the attic partially fell through the ceiling, and police said he pointed a gun at an officer.

Police backed out of the scene, maintaining communication with the man, until he fell entirely through the ceiling.

Officers and deputies were then able to take him into custody.  The standoff ended at 4:16 pm Saturday afternoon.

Police identified him as 42 year old William Sagarria Pegeus, he was brought to McLeod Health in Cheraw to be observed.

Pegeus has not been charged at this time, observations are needed to see if it was a mental condition or drug use that was to blame.

Chief Thomas said if drugs are discovered Pegeus could be charged will pointing a weapon at an officer.
