SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – Deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a Friday morning shooting incident that happened near US 15 South.

According to Ken Bell with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call that man had been shot beside the roadway on US 15 South near the intersection with Old Manning Road around 11:20 a.m.

Officials say the the 21-year-old victim’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. He was transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey hospital.

Witnesses say two men were fighting beside the roadway when one of the men pulled a gun and shot the other man in the leg before driving off.

“Everything we have been able to determine so far indicates that this is an isolated incident,” said Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis. “No one in the community has any reason to fear.”

Bell says the suspect was taken into custody Friday afternoon by Dorchester County Deputies without incident.

Marcus Evans, also known as Tony Evans, is being held overnight in Dorchester County. Sumter County authorities will bring him back to Sumter on Saturday where he will be charged with attempted murder and possibly other charges.
