SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Law enforcement officials announced the arrest of a suspected serial rapist in Spartanburg County.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Spartanburg Police Department and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Gregory Howard Frye, 52, of Spartanburg was arrested by investigators Tuesday and was taken to the Spartanburg Police Department.

Officials said he’s suspected of sexually assaulting or attempting to assault 12 women at apartment complexes over an eight-year period.

According to a sheriff’s office news release, all of the offenses happened in the early morning hours and victims described the suspect as being arond 5-foot-10 inches tall to 6-foot-tall, weiged around 160 to 190 pounds, was well-spoken, wore dark clothing and was wearing either a baseball cap or toboggan.

According Lt. Kevin Bobo, Frye DNA matched to six of the cases and said there was either no evidence to be collected or that it was an attempted rape in the other six cases.

Frye was charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct for one of the incidents that happened in the county.

Additional charges are pending.

Frye appeared before a magistrate Tuesday night, who said he would have to appear before a Circuit Court judge for arraignment at a later date.

Spartanburg Police Chief Alonzo Thompson said victims were 14 to 51 years old. One victim was targeted twice, bringing the total number of offenses to 13.

Two assaults happened in the city of Spartanburg, while 11 were in Spartanburg County between 1995 and 2003.

Chief Thompson said investigators began reviewing cases about six months ago.

“Investigators from both agencies worked tirelessly,” he said.

They learned last week from South Carolina Law Enforcement Division officials that Frye’s DNA was matched to evidence.

“This is a great day to know that we’ve got at least one person that’s going to be held accountable for a reign of terror that he’s caused for these victims,” Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright told reporters.

According to the release, the sheriff’s office and the police department have notified neighboring agencies to allow them to review any similar crimes in their jurisdictions.

Frye remains in the Spartanburg County Detention Center without bond.
