LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – A man has been charged with murder in the death of another man in Robeson County.

Javaras Hammonds, 20, of Norment Road in Lumberton, was arrested around 11 a.m. Tuesday at his home by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshalls Service, according to the RCSO. Hammonds is charged with first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection to the death of Avery Scurlock, 23, of Lumber Bridge.

RCSO deputies responded to the 100 block of Old Tower Road in Lumberton around 12:07 a.m. on June 5 for shots fired in the area, the sheriff’s office said. Upon arriving, deputies found Scurlock dead in a field.

Scurlock was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion SE that was reportedly stolen during the incident, the RCSO also said. The car was later found in the St. Pauls area.

Hammonds is being held without bond at the RCSO.

“No parent should have to suffer the loss of their child under any circumstances. But, to learn that their son was brutally murdered by being shot multiple times and left to die is inconceivable. However, while the investigation continues, we are pleased to bring closure to this family as we seek justice,” Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 910-671-3100.
