An arrest has been made in a deadly nightclub shooting in Marlboro County.

Tajuwon Deondre Short, 18 of Rockingham, NC, was arrested Monday afternoon after turning himself in. Deputies with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office say he was responsible for the shooting at the State Line Bar & Grill on May 4.

Short was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful carrying of a pistol. He will later receive a bond hearing from a circuit court judge.

Deputies initially responded to the nightclub during the early morning hours of May 4 after being notified that a North Carolina hospital was rendering aid to a victim that was shot at the nightclub. The victim was pronounced dead. That person was identified by North Carolina Medical Examiner Leo Goodwin as Kinnie Marquan Utley, 22 of Rockingham, NC.

Sheriff Charles Lemon has announced that he has begun the legal steps necessary to close down the State Line Bar & Grill due to incidents that have occurred there as well as violations committed by the operators.

The sheriff’s office thanked SLED and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office (NC) for assistance in the investigation.
