A sewage leak that spilled an unknown about of sewage into the Withers Swash basin has been repaired.
According to Mark Kruea with the City of Myrtle Beach, the leak occurred at the force pump main near Fifth Avenue South sometime overnight from Saturday to Sunday. The break was discovered Sunday morning.
An undetermined amount of sewage spilled onto the road and the nearby drainage channel in the Withers Swash basin. Crews immediately redirected the sewer flow to other mains, disinfected the areas where the spill occurred and repaired the pipeline. The force main is back in service this afternoon.
DHEC has been notified of the leak and a DHEC representative from the department’s response team visited the site.
As a precaution signs are being posted this evening at the Fifth Avenue South drainage channel advising of the spill. More signs will be posted at Withers Swash and the beach.
CCU staff will take additional water quality samples from the area on Monday as part of the city’s regular weekly water quality testings. If needed, more sampling will occur to assure that water quality in the basin and elsewhere is satisfactory.
