LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – After refusing to stop for a checkpoint in Lake City Tuesday night, a Scranton man was found lying in a ditch of water hiding from police, according to officials.
Lake City Police Chief Kipp Coker says his department was conducting a checkpoint stop on Matthews Road Tuesday night when a car refused to stop for the checkpoint. Officers went after the driver but during the chase, lost sight of the suspect’s car.
When officers doubled back through the area, they found the suspect’s car crashed at the end of Matthews Road. The suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Nicholas Lee Jones, of Scranton, has ran from the scene.
Major Mike Nunn with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office says the K9 tracking team was called in to located Jones. After a brief search, Jones was found lying in a canal ditch full of water attempting to hide from police.
Jones was booked into the Florence County Detention Center at 12:56 a.m. Wednesday morning on a number of charges including, driving under suspension, failure to stop for blue lights, resisting arrest, DUI, open container, habitual traffic offender, and manufacturing or possession of a scheduled I, II or III drug.
According to online booking records, no bond has been set.
