After hearing word that a U.S. Navy veteran had a heart attack and passed away in his home in Conway this week, the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association decided to take it into their own hands to assure that the man is properly honored and given the respectful burial he deserves.
Sheldon Shepherd was 67 years old and served as a seal team member for four tours in Vietnam. During his time at war he was shot in the head twice and broke his hip, he received many medals including two bronze stars for valor and a purple heart.
Army Veteran and spokesperson for , Kim-Cameron King said although he never had the privilege of meeting Shepherd, he considers him family.
“I don’t know Sheldon Shepherd from a hole in the wall, but he’s my brother and I mean that. We have a motto in our group ‘I am my brother’s keeper’ and we have another one ‘I got your six’ which means I got your back no matter what no matter what situation, it doesn’t matter, we take it to heart.” King said.
On Saturday, a wake is being held for Shepherd at the Goldfinch Funeral Home in Conway from 2-4 PM. On February 18, the combat veteran association plans to help escort Shepherd’s remains to the Florence National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Horry County Animal Care Center, 1923 Industrial Park Rd., Conway, SC 29527.
One of Shepherd’s close friends, Donna Thompson told News 13 that Sheldon Shepherd helped thousands of people in Conway get sober at The Shepherd Center.
“He had an incredible heart and we will miss him forever.” Thompson said.
