MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Several changes are coming to the Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Director of Airports, Scott Van Moppes, said projections show three million people, and 25,000 flights, are expected to come in and out of the airport this year.

“The airport is growing at such a fast rate that we’re trying to stay on top of it so the customer experience remains positive,” said Van Moppes.

He said the experience starts with parking and the airport should be finished with a 1,000-space lot by the end of 2018. Another 1,000-space lot is currently being reviewed by the FAA.

Van Moppes said they also plan to get more check-in kiosks, as most of their check in counters will be full now that the airport added Frontier Airlines. The amount of airlines at MYR has grown from six in 2013 to 10 in 2018.

“The last thing you want is to have airlines coming in and not have a spot to put them,” said Van Moppes. “So we’re fortunate that we’re a common use airport. We’re able to move airlines around as needed as opposed to other facilities. We still have room to grow, we just want to stay ahead of the curve.”

By April, the airport will have two more TSA lines bringing the total from four to six.

“You don’t want long lines. You want the passengers to be served quickly and get upstairs to their gate,” said Van Moppes.

There is also talk of adding another airline next year but no details are available at this time.
