NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The City of North Myrtle Beach says a portion of Water Tower Road will be closed for repairs for three weeks.

A release from the city Tuesday morning says road work will begin in the early morning hours Thursday on Water Tower Road between Highway 31 and Highway 22. Major repairs are needed throughout the 1.5 mile stretch of roadway after rainwater entered the road base, froze, lifted and ruined the asphalt surface.

City officials say the contractor will remove the existing asphalt from the roadway, mix it with a concrete polymer, and then apply the mix to the roadway to form a more stable base. The mix must cure for several days, followed by the application of a final course of asphalt.

Officials say it would be unsafe to have only one lane of the road open as there is no lighting on that portion of the road, there are guardrails lining the area and islands in the middle of the road.

Provisions have been made for access by emergency vehicles. The project will cost about $523,000, officials report.

The road is expected to reopen on or around April 8, weather permitting.
