CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – A Conway woman celebrated a huge birthday Monday.

Kathleen Bond turned 100 years old.

Kathleen says when she turned 99, she was determined to celebrate her 100th birthday.

“I was coming to this (party) if I had to come in an ambulance,” she said.

Kathleen made it just fine to her birthday party at the Brookdale Conway senior living center Monday.

She’s originally from Alexandria, Virginia, but moved to the Grand Strand with her late husband Bill in the 80s.

“My marriage was my whole life, and my children,” Kathleen said. “I worked at a lot of places to keep my children in good schools.”

Kathleen worked as a recruiter at NASA during the first Moon landing. She also worked for the Pentagon, General Motors and National Geographic.

While Kathleen is modest about her career, her family is very proud.

“She was ahead of her time as far as women in the workforce,” said Carole Kochan, Kathleen’s great-niece.

Kathleen’s friends at Brookdale say her accomplishments and her kindness are an inspiration.

“At this age, (with) her energy, I hope I live to be 100 and be as good as she is,” said Kathleen’s friend Esther Hetherton.

Kathleen also received many birthday cards, including a letter from Gov. Henry McMaster.

“It’s overwhelming for what I thought was just another ordinary day in my life,” Kathleen said.

Kathleen was the youngest of 11 children growing up and she had three kids of her own.
