Berkeley County Deputy Cody Gooch has been released from Trident Hospital after being shot shortly before 6 a.m. on Friday.
“Yesterday we witnessed some of the meanness that exists in society but we prevailed. Deputy Gooch was doing his job when someone tried to take his life and we are ever so grateful and blessed that, although shot, was not grievously injured. The medical staff and Dr. John Smear were outstanding and very helpful, I cannot say enough about great they were and I sincerely appreciate their expertise and compassion,” Sheriff Duane Lewis stated.
Sheriff Lewis says deputies were called to a life-threatening domestic disturbance at a home on Pine Tree Drive.
The suspect, who had been shot, was apprehended a short distance away. The suspect has been identified as Calvin Lorenzo Middleton III, of 1055 Pine Tree Drive in St. Stephen.
Deputy Gooch was shot after he stopped a man who was trying to leave the scene. Chief Deputy Mike Cochran says the wounded deputy returned fire, immobilizing the suspect.
