State law enforcement announced Monday a Marlboro county mother has been charged after a deadly crash in Bennettsville February 11.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol website, the crash happened on SC-9, near the intersection at David’s Pond Road just before 9:30 p.m., Sunday.

Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown says the woman was walking with her infant daughter when they were struck by a car. The 3-week-old baby girl died from the impact of the crash and the mother was taken to McLeod Health Cheraw in critical condition.

SLED arrest warrants state Sonali Stancil, 21, has been charged with unlawful conduct towards a child and pedestrian on a highway.

The documents say she illegally walked in the road with the baby, placing the infant at “an unreasonable risk of harm, resulting in her death” and also “failed to yield the right of way to vehicles and contributed to a collision.”

Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating.
