Coastal Grand Mall and Champion Autism Network created a sensory-friendly visit with the Easter bunny for families of children with autism.

Coastal Grand opened two hours early on Sunday, exclusively for children with special needs and their families. The mall turned off all music and additional sound to accommodate their sensory needs. Children of all ages were able to take pictures with the Easter bunny, and take part in Easter-themed crafts.

Champion Autism Network also organizes sensory-friendly visits to Ripley’s Aquarium, Wonder Works, and an upcoming visit to Dave and Buster’s. This was the second sensory-friendly event at Coastal Grand. Mall spokesperson Tori Dean said they hope to hold another for back-to-school shopping.

“We’re just so blessed. One of our messages is just to lead with love. It’s that easy,” said CAN Exective Director Becky Large. “No judgment of our families. If you see someone with a tantrum or meltdown, it’s probably a family in crisis, not a naughty child or bad parents,” she said.
