MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Noel Hughes joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. on Friday to talk about the effort to rebuild the Matt Hughes skate park in Myrtle Beach. She also talked about an upcoming live music event to raise money for that effort.
The state park was named after Noel’s brother Matt about 20 years ago after he died in a skateboarding accident. In the two decades since then, the park has aged, and it now has obvious signs of wear and tear.
Noel said it’s important to maintain the park because it gives skateboarders a place to have fun and stay out of trouble. For some skateboarders it’s even a refuge.
She said the goal is to also make the skate park a place that could attract people from out of town for competitions.
Watch the video to hear more about plans for the park. The city of Myrtle Beach has pledged money, but donations from the community will ensure the park is a vibrant part of the community for years to come.
The live music concert is called the Good Vibes Concert. It will be Sunday, March 25 at 5 p.m. at the Boathouse on the waterway just west of Myrtle Beach. In addition to music, there will be great food and also auctions of great items, including some things of special interest to the skate and surf community.
A $5 donation earns you access to the fun. More details can be found at the event’s facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/311656402688877/
