LORIS, SC (WBTW) – It looks like candy, but police in Loris are warning parents to watch out for drugs that look like rock candy found in the city last week.
Police say they think the edibles with THC, which is what’s in marijuana that gets someone high, came from California.
Loris police arrested 24-year-old Majana Jordan of Sacramento, California, on Thursday. They say after finding her illegally parked in the Hills grocery store plaza on Broad Street, officers smelled marijuana in her car.
According to the police report, officers searched the car and found mason jars with marijuana, along with several edibles that contained THC.
“You just don’t know what’s in it,” said interim police chief Gary Buley. “It looks just like regular candy and you wouldn’t know.”
The edibles include what looks like rock candy, with labels like pineapple, coconut and strawberry, with prices on the bags.
Police say they also found liquids and wax containing THC in Jordan’s car.
“This is not something that’s normal in the city,” interim police chief Buley said. “It’s something that, in my time being here, we’ve never found.”
Jordan faces two drug charges, including intent to distribute.
Interim police chief Buley says while these drugs are new to Loris, he’s concerned children may get sick from what looks like candy.
“With THC and edibles, you can’t measure correctly,” he said. “You’re getting high quickly on a small amount.”
Interim police chief Buley also says he doesn’t know how much THC is in the edibles or where the edibles came from in California, where recreational marijuana use is legal.
Jordan was released from jail on bond Friday.
The Loris Police Department also posted a warning about the edible drugs on its Facebook page Monday.
