Hundreds of people celebrated the opening of International Drive, with the first ever International Drive Road Race.
The Horry County Wellness Committee hosted the race, which began by Ocean Bay Elementary School More than 600 people ran in either the 5K, 10K, or One Mile Fun Run for kids.
Organizers said they decided to start the race as a way to encourage Horry County employees to stay healthy, but eventually decided to include the entire community.
“We do a lot of things in our government to get our people fit and help them lead happier, healthy lives. We focus on a lot of diet and education but we don’t have a lot of wellness programs in terms of exercise, so this is what we wanted to do to get people running,” said John Bodner, Horry County Strategy and Performance Manager.
The International Drive Road Race will become an annual event.
