According to Robeson County Sheriff Ken Sealey, the crash occurred on Union Chapel Road in the Pembroke area of Robeson County.
North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Jonathan Scott says the car crash happened Sunday morning around 4:51 a.m. The wreck involved one car with two occupants, including the driver, who was going roughly 95 m.p.h. in a 45 m.p.h. zone, states Scott.
The driver overcorrected, crossed the center line, hit a ditch and flipped the vehicle several times, describes Scott. The passenger was thrown roughly 150 feet from where the vehicle stopped. The victim, identified as Austin Orion Strickland, 20, of Robeson County, died at the hospital.
The driver of the car, Tralyn Lee Checotah Burns, 20, of Robeson County, is charged with second-degree murder and driving while intoxicated. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt, says Scott.
