A woman has been charged after leaving a puppy in a car.

A police report from the Myrtle Beach Police Department says 19-year-old Romany Denae Newkirk is facing several charges, including Mistreatment of Animals, for leaving a 1-month-old puppy in a car for several hours without water.

A Breakers hotel employee called police around 2 p.m. on Saturday for a dog that had been left in a car in the hotel’s parking garage on N. Ocean Boulevard. Upon arriving at the parking garage, officers could not locate Newkirk, who was staying at the hotel, and found the puppy in distress in the car. The car was unlocked and officers were able to remove the puppy from the car. Animal control officers were called to the scene and took the puppy to the Myrtle Beach Humane Society. Newkirk was found by police shortly afterwards and arrested. Newkirk told police the puppy belonged to her roommate.
