With only six game wardens covering the Horry County area, Lance Corporal Ronnie Floyd says SCDNR officers have had a busy start to the summer so far.
.Officers are still investigating after a deadly jet ski crash that happened on Saturday near Red Bluff Boat landing. They arrested Michael Shane Rimer, 51, and charged him with boating under the influence of alcohol bodily damage or death results.
Lance Corporal Floyd says they’ve also seen several drownings this summer, as well as minor accidents involving people renting jet ski’s with little prior experience.
“Especially jet drivers, once you let off the throttle it lets off the gas and keeps going where it was going, there’s no steering, it’s not like a car where you can slam on the breaks and maneuver at the same time.” Floyd said.
Gearing up for the Fourth of July, he says they plan to have all hands on deck and work with multiple agencies across the region to assure safety at every body of water.
“We’ll bring in officers from other parts of the state to come in with us, I know the county police will join us as well as the City of Conway will have boats out.” Floyd said.
