CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Library System is introducing a new program to give kids and parents access to interactive learning activities.

The program is called Adventure Packs and it’s available at all Horry County Libraries. When you come into the library, you don’t have to check out a stack of books to learn about a specific topic. Now, you can check out an Adventure Pack backpack and you’ll find a launch pad tablet, educational toys, learning worksheets, books, movies, and CDs to help kids understand different subjects.

“Everybody learns different ways, so we’re hoping this will touch on several different learning styles at once,” said Conway Head Librarian Tracy Elvis-Weitzel. “So any child, any learning style can pick it up and maintain what they’ve learned.”

She said the backpacks touch on the same subjects kids learn in school like math, science, social studies, and technology. “Everything that they would do at school, they’re doing with this pack, but they’re just doing it in a fun manner.”

These bookbags also work with kids on how to handle their emotions and how to improve their social skills. “How to interact with other children. How to interact with adults, and how to be a good friend.” She said sometimes dealing with the loss of a family member is hard for kids to comprehend. “Grief,” said Elvis-Weitzel. “Not always the best topic, but it’s one that’s difficult for children to handle, and a lot of times when you’re going through that process, it’s difficult for a parent to help a child through that.”

The bookbags are available at all Horry County Libraries as long as you have a library card.
