LORIS, SC (WBTW) – Horry County police are investigating an attempted murder after a man crashed his car and ran into a wooded area off Highway 348 to escape being shot.
A police report states officers were called to the area of Daisy Road and Highway 348 Monday night around 9:20 p.m. for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found a tan Mercury crashed into the woods off Highway 348. The car had multiple bullet holes in it, officers say. The owner of the car was located a short time later at a nearby home.
The owner told officers he was selling his car on Facebook and a potential buyer came to his home and wanted to take the car out to make sure it was in good working order, the report explains.
The owner of the car drove and the potential buyer was in the passenger seat. As the duo turned off Pine View Drive onto Daisy Road, the driver noticed he was being followed by a newer model Nissan Maxima. Then someone from the Nissan fired multiple shots at his car. In his attempt to avoid the bullets, the driver crashed the car into the woods, then jumped out of the car and started running, according to the report.
The passenger told police he stayed in the car, lowering himself to the floor.
The driver told officers he thinks the shooter is an acquaintance who is now dating his former girlfriend and that the possible shooter is jealous of his past relationship. Officers went to the former girlfriend’s home trying to locate the possible suspect, but he wasn’t located.
Officers say no one was hit by the bullets and the case remains an open investigation.
