PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WBTW) – A Pawleys Island family says their home was struck by lightning early Monday morning.
Midway Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Mark Nugent says crews were called at 7:02 a.m. to a home on Parker Drive in Pawleys Island for a fire. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find the attic of a three-story home on fire.
The homeowners were inside when the fire started but were able to get out quickly. Nugent says someone opened the attic hatch and saw smoke and quickly closed it, preventing the fire from spreading.
Firefighters were able to isolate the fire to the attic. Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire and Georgetown City fire helped, confirms Nugent.
No injuries were reported, but the fire did damage the home’s HVAC system.
Midway Fire officials are investigating and while they can’t yet say what caused the fire, the homeowner believes the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
