CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – A group of school shooting survivors from Parkland, Florida is bringing the March for our Lives: Road to Change bus tour to Charleston on Tuesday.
The group will hold a free town hall meeting at the College of Charleston’s Sottile Theatre at 7 p.m.
According to organizers, the town hall will feature a number of state and national politicians, who will participate in a one-hour, moderated discussion before a 30-minute Q & A session with audience members.
The shooting survivors will also participate in a private roundtable discussion with the families and friends of the Emanuel AME Church shooting victims.
Ever since the Valentine’s Day shooting in Parkland, which killed 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, those involved in the March for Our Lives movement have been demanding an end to gun violence in schools, churches, nightclubs, concerts, movie theaters, airports, and other places where Americans gather.
The group wants five changes to gun laws nationwide:
- Universal, comprehensive background checks for firearm purchases
- A searchable, digitized database for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
- Funds for the Centers for Disease Control to research the gun violence epidemic in America
- A ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines
- A ban on semi-automatic assault rifles
As of Thursday, 200 seats had been reserved for Tuesday’s town hall.
A group called Lowcountry Students for Political Action helped organize the event.
