SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Beach renourishment in Surfside Beach is set to begin soon, with signs of the project already in place along parts of the beach.

Crews are in the process of laying pipe and other material down, and have fenced off certain sections of the shore. Right now, the fence is higher up on the sand, so people are still able to freely walk up and down the beach closer to the shore.

In May, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced an additional $29 million in federal funding for renourishment projects along the Grand Strand. The work is meant to fix damage from recent storms, but some vacationers aren’t happy with the construction in front of their rentals.

“We have to make the long trek behind the fence and down to the beach,” explains Bonnie Hamilton, who’s vacationing in Surfside Beach. “And when you have three toddlers, a new baby, and two seven-year-olds it’s quite a trek to come down the beach.”

Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Garden City were also selected for renourishment work this summer. The current schedule has crews working through December, ending in North Myrtle Beach.
