The Downtown Redevelopment Corporation signed an agreement for a 180 day due diligence period before officially purchasing Myrtle Beach’s oldest movie theatre on the Superblock.
Executive Director, Lauren Clever says they would be purchasing it as a place holder until CCU can have approval to move forward with it.
Opening back in the 1930’s, the theatre is sometimes overlooked but is considered a staple to Myrtle Beach.
For the last 14 years, owner of Encore Productions, Rik Dickinson has utilized the space to work on a wide range of projects.
“Myrtle Beach really isn’t that old, so for this being the oldest movie theatre in town, it’s pretty cool.” Dickinson said.
After deciding he no longer needs the space, he decided to put it up for sale.
“I had it up for about six months, and I was getting all kinds of strange concepts of people who wanted to buy it.” Dickinson said.
The DRC has been vocal in their recent meetings about incorporating Coastal Carolina University into transforming the Superblock, making it more attractive for all age groups.
“I feel good about CCU wanting it, they lost their theatre and this is a building that will work for them with buildings next door as offices and classrooms,” Dickinson said. “It’s going to work out really well but most of all it’s going to work out really well for downtown Myrtle Beach.” Dickinson said.
