CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – Chapel Hill High School has canceled its varsity football season because of a “low turnout” of players, officials said in a news release Monday evening.
The low turnout of students for the Chapel Hill High School football team is “particularly at the upper-grade levels,” a news release from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools said.
The junior varsity team will have a season and will compete as planned, officials said.
“As a former football coach, this decision was a hard one for us to make,” Chapel Hill High School Athletic Director Tim Bennett said in the news release. “However, it is the right decision for our kids and program at this time.”
The Tigers finished 6-6 in 2015, but have mustered just three wins in their last two seasons combined.
Officials said they plan to “rebuild the program” this year and “offer a competitive varsity football program next year.”
