No one was injured after a vehicle with a woman and her son was shot at in the Conway area, police say.
Captain John Harrelson, with the Horry County Police Department, says a victim and her seven-year-old child were driving through the 1500 block of Hemingway Chapel Road on Tuesday. When they approached a black SUV, possibly a Dodge Durango, parked in a driving facing oncoming traffic, the victim slowed down because of the position of the vehicle and saw armed people. The SUV then pulled away and left the area.
According to Harrelson, another vehicle, possibly a gray Dodge Charger, approached the victim. As this vehicle passed the victim, the victim’s vehicle was hit about four times by gunfire. The victim fled the area and contacted law enforcement. There were no injuries to the victim or her child.
Harrelson also says officers responded and found a residence in the 1500 block of Hemingway Chapel Rd. with shell casings in the road and yard. This residence is believed by police to be where the victim was fired at. The resident of the home was found and police say they were not home at the time of the incident.
Witnesses report as many as 10 masked people being in the yard of this residence, according to Harrelson. One witness said they observed a person with a white mask armed with what appeared to be a long gun.
A police report from the HCPD, says officers responded to a residence on Rasberry Lane in reference to a possible attempted murder incident around 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday. The attempted murder incident happened at the intersection of Hemingway Chapel Rd. and Rasberry Lane, the report adds. While investigating this incident, officers found there possibly was another shots fired report that happened at a residence on Hemingway Chapel Rd. Detectives arrived and took over the investigation. The police report also lists the victims as a seven-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman from Conway.
Another police report says officers were told possible suspects involved in the attempted murder incident were in the backyard of the victim’s residence on Hemingway Chapel Rd. Responding officers were told that there were possibly 10 people wearing masks and carrying firearms. While approaching the home, the victim’s car was in the driveway and had noticeable damage. Officers found about seven bullet holes in the vehicle as well as vehicle tracks and several shelling casings in the backyard. Officers spoke with several people in the neighborhood and found the victim’s mother lived next door to the victim. Officers spoke with the victim’s mother and received the victim’s contact information. An officer spoke with the victim over the phone and the victim said he had been at work since 3 p.m. The victim also said he didn’t know why someone would be in his yard firing at his property and that he has not had any problems with anyone.
Suspect descriptions are limited, Harrelson says. Anyone with information is asked to contact the HCPD at 843-915-TIPS or crimetips@horrycounty.org.
