The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual “Washington Night” Wednesday. The town-hall style conference allows business leaders in the community to hear from members of Congress.
Congressmen Joe Wilson and Ralph Norman spoke to a crowd of about 100 Wednesday night with most of the topics dealing with something many of us use everyday…MONEY.
The pair talked about federal budgets and spending and tax cuts. But one of the hot topics of the evening was trade wars.
Recently, an electronic company in Fairfield county announced its closure because of the possible impact of tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump. At the beginning of October, Element TV will have to let more than 120 of its employees go.
“At the end of the day what I think the president is doing is bringing these things to bargaining the table and I hope he phases them it. Element TV announced lately that it can’t handle some exemptions on their parts and they’re going to have to close down,” said Congressman Ralph Norman.
Both congressmen agreed that President Trump’s tariffs are fair, but hope a resolution is near.
Congressman Joe Wilson added, “I’m very confident that we have the ability to negotiate with allies around the world whether it’s the EU or our friends in Asia. I am very optimistic in the interest and talent being pursued by the administration.”
During the debate style Q&A, the lawmakers also spoke about the opioid epidemic and its impact on the state.
