NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – One Horry County school is taking steps to help students improve their literacy, and they’re getting the community involved to help.
North Myrtle Beach Middle School is participating in the International Day of Literacy, but for one English and Language Arts teacher, the effort to improve literacy goes far beyond one day. Susan Hamilton said the school is placing emphasis on building stronger relationships with each student. She said in doing this, they find students are more motivated to succeed in life. “With those relationships we’ve built with them, they feel empowered,” said Hamilton. “They feel important. They feel confident about themselves.”
Literacy Day is normally celebrated on Sept. 8, but because it falls on a Saturday, North Myrtle Beach Middle will be celebrating on Friday, Sept. 7. They are getting the community involved by having professionals around the area come in and talk to students about why reading is important to them, and how it plays a part in them being successful in their careers. “Every person in a career is going to have to know how to read. They’re going to have to know how to write, and they’re going to have to know how to communicate,” said Hamilton. “So it’s very important that we promote that and help the students realize that it’s very important.”
Hamilton said the middle school level is a critical time to make sure students can be on the right track academically, but also in their own lives as well. “It’s imperative, at this particular age, with everything going on in our community for these students to know that their education is so important.”
