FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Lucky Dog Animal Rescue based in Arlington, Virginia says a trip to Florence to save nearly 40 shelter animals revealed the kindness and goodwill of North and South Carolinians.
The group brought a cargo van to transport the cats and dogs housed with the Lucky Dog’s Team South Carolina and Florence Area Humane Society back to Washington, D.C. ahead of Hurricane Florence. Just 90 minutes into the six-hour trip, the van’s alternator failed. The rescue volunteers and animals were stranded at a gas station on I-95.
After calling for volunteer drivers, the rescue group was overwhelmed with the response. More than 55 people arrived at the gas station to help unload dogs and get them into air-conditioned cars. Army volunteers brought water and another good Samaritan paid to replace the van’s alternator so it could get back to South Carolina.
The group says in the face of the hurricane, 55 amazing people took time out of their own preparations to help the cats and dogs. The animals made it safely to a northern area rescue to find permanent homes.
