DILLON, SC (WBTW) – FEMA has begun assessing Hurricane Florence damage in Dillon County.

Officials with the Dillon County Emergency Operation Center and South Carolina Emergency Management Division say about 400 homes were impacted in some way by Hurricane Florence. 98 of those homes had minor damage and 73 had major damage. According to Kim Corley McLeod with the State Emergency Management Division, the devastation is “a combination of flooding and wind damage.”

“Anyone who is impacted and hasn’t gotten in touch with FEMA or the Dillon County Emergency Management Office, we encourage them to do so. That way, we can get disaster assistance out there to their homes,” she said. “And we know that disaster assistance and FEMA have already made contact with 86 homes right now. And they’re continuing that process.”

Inspectors arrived in town this week. Some of them went door-to-door to talk with homeowners about the damage and analyze it. McLeod is encouraging residents to either file claims with their insurance companies or contact FEMA or do both if necessary.

“If you’re not insured or if you’ve already gone through your insurance company, we’re asking everyone to reach out to FEMA and you can do that by calling the 1-800 number. That’s 1-800-621-3362. You can use the FEMA app or you can go to DisasterAssistance.gov,” she said.

We’re also told 10 roads are closed throughout the area due to flooding or washouts. Some of those closed roads had standing water for more than three days. Officials say the road conditions are repairable and SCDOT crews are currently working to fix them.
