MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Transportation Committee recently approved $71,322 to add sidewalks in the Socastee area.
Horry County Councilman Cam Crawford proposed adding sidewalks on Luttie Rd. near Socastee Elementary to make it easier to get to Highway 707.
“The concern is from the apartment complex to 707, and how do we make that safer for students walking to school in the morning?” said Councilman Crawford. “I think the answer to that would be installing sidewalks.”
He said because the street is more open at the top of Luttie Rd. near Socastee Elementary, people are driving faster, and they continue driving fast when they turn onto Luttie Rd. Councilman Crawford said that is a safety concern for kids walking to school, because there is only a grass shoulder and a ditch on the side of the road.
Gayle Singleton lives in the Socastee area and she can see Luttie Rd. from the window of her house. She expressed concerns to Councilman Crawford about how unsafe it is for people walking, kids going to school, and people in wheelchairs. “It just breaks my heart,” said Singleton. “I cringe because I’m so afraid that someone is going to end up getting hit or maybe even killed,” said Singleton.
Councilman Crawford was approved for $71,322 by the transportation committee and he said the other $10,000 needed for this project will come from Horry County. He is partnering with engineers to work out a timeline for when construction will start. WBTW will be following the progression of this project.
