HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County homeowners who were flooded after Hurricane Florence are looking to the county government for answers on what to do next.

Most homes on Saint George Lane in the Burgess area never flooded before Hurricane Florence, but some homeowners say that experiencing the devastation once is enough to make them want to move.

“We don’t even live in a flood zone, but I’ll tell you, I don’t ever want to deal with this again,” Cheri Cardoza-Young, a homeowner in the Burgess area said.

The flooding from Hurricane Florence devastated Cardoza-Young’s home. She says FEMA is giving her a fraction of what it will take to rebuild, and without flood insurance, she is running out of other options.

“There’s no way I can rebuild on what they’ve allotted me to rebuild with,” Cardoza-Young said. “If FEMA can’t help me, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

Cardoza-Young, along with other Horry County residents in flood-prone areas say that they would move, however, selling their home would be very difficult because of its flood history.

Cardoza-Young is hoping Horry County and FEMA will buyout some flooded homes. She says she would be willing to accept a buyout option even if it means getting only a percentage of what her home was worth before the flood.

“It’s a loss, but it’s a gain at the same time,” Cardoza-Young said. “Money isn’t everything. To be able to get something and walk away and be safe and free of it, it’d be worth it.”

The Horry County Government has not issued or funded any buyouts at this point.
