A man has been arrested after a police chase on Sunday in the Surfside Beach area.
Officers responded to the area of Glenns Bay Road in the Surfside Beach area around 11:38 a.m. on Sunday to assist Surfside Beach police in locating a suspect wanted out of Myrtle Beach, who ran on foot, according to an incident report from the Horry County Police Department.
As officers were attempting to locate the suspect, a witness told Surfside Beach officers that the suspect had gotten into a white truck, the report says. HCPD officers ran the license plate of the truck and found the vehicle belongs to the father of one the suspect’s friends with an address on 2nd Ave. North in Surfside Beach. HCPD officers located the vehicle at the address and initiated a traffic stop.
The vehicle came “to a complete stop, at which point it was observed that the offender attempted to force the driver into fleeing the scene by stomping on the accelerator while the brake was still engaged,” according to the release. This caused “the tires to spin” and prohibited the car from being put in park. A 21-year-old man “jumped out of the car quickly” and the suspect “fled from the scene, spinning the tires at a high rate of speed.”
“Once the vehicle sped away from HCPD officers after blue lights and sirens had been activated, a vehicle pursuit ensued,” states the release. Officers followed the suspect as he traveled north on Highway 17 Business towards Myrtle Beach “at a high rate of speed.” The suspect went through traffic and “made a right turn onto Highway 544, going west toward Conway, still at speeds up to 75 mph.”
Officers continued to follow the suspect and vehicle down Hwy 544 west “with heavy traffic conditions, with additional units following,” the report also says. “The vehicle continued to drive through the median and into oncoming traffic at high speeds trying to avoid the heavy traffic.” As officers passed the Speedway gas station near the intersection of Beaver Run Blvd. and Hwy 544, “it was observed that the vehicle collided with another vehicle” in the eastbound lane of Hwy 544 and “flipped multiple times before coming to a rest in front of Arby’s.”
Officers observed the suspect “get up and begin to run away from the scene of the collision on foot,” the report further says. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody and the suspect was taken to a hospital. Another person was also taken to the hospital by EMS.
According to the report, the case will be presented to a local magistrate judge for carjacking, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and failure to stop for blue lights resulting in great bodily injury. SC Highway Patrol took over investigation of the collision and “will be pursuing their own charges.”
Dillon Scott Robinson, 21, of Melody Lane in Surfside Beach, was arrested around noon on Sunday, the report says.
J. Reuben Long Detention Center booking records show Robinson was booked around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday and remains incarcerated as of Monday evening. His charges include: two counts of driving under suspension; failure to stop for a blue light where great bodily injury results; carjacking; poss., conceal, sell, or dispose of stolen vehicle with value of $5,000 or more; failure to stop for a blue light with no injury or death for a first offense; habitual traffic offender; and obtain signature or prop. under false pretenses with a value $1,000 or less.
