MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach police were called to respond to 30th Avenue North Wednesday morning after a seal made its way to shore.
Cpl. Thomas Vest with Myrtle Beach police says SC DNR was contacted about the animal swimming up on the beach. According to DNR, the seal appears to have a shark bite injury to its flipper. A veterinarian was called to look at the animal and evaluate the extent of its injuries.
NOAA’s Marine Mammal Stranding Network and US Fish and Wildlife are also working the case.
The seal is still on the beach, as of Wednesday night.
Since NOAA began counting in 1994, there have been 26 sightings of seals in South Carolina. The majority of the sightings have been harbor seals, but one harp seal sighting has been documented.
Myrtle Beach reportedly had a harbor seal sighting in 2003. According to NOAA, seals are normally found from the Canadian Arctic to New York.
